Technical Services Librarian
George Washington’s Mount Vernon Estate & Gardens seeks applicants for
the full-time position of Technical Services Librarian. The Technical
Services Librarian has responsibility for cataloging in all formats,
including special collections; managing serials; and overseeing
technical services operations, including the preservation and
conservation of library collections. H/she will supervise 1 part-time
cataloger, volunteers, and interns and work closely with the Head
Librarian and Special Collections Librarian. Mount Vernon is planning
for a new library building with expanded services and collections and is
seeking an energetic, enthusiastic, and committed librarian, who can
improve access to our unique and historic library collections.
Qualifications: An MLS from an ALA-accredited program; at least 3 years
relevant experience, including cataloging of rare books and manuscripts;
experience working with an integrated library system, preferably OCLC
Connexion Browser; subject expertise in 18th-century American history
and culture.

Special Collections Librarian

Collections Librarian has responsibility for collection development and
assessment in the areas of rare books, manuscripts, maps, and archives
and for negotiating acquisitions for gifts and purchases. S/he
participates in donor outreach efforts and the identification and
application for external, private funding opportunities. S/he provides
public service assistance to library users; promotes awareness and use
of special collections to students and researchers at Mount Vernon and
beyond; and works with the Head Librarian on strategic planning for
bibliographic control and development of these resources. Mount Vernon
is planning for a new library building with expanded services and
collections and is seeking an energetic, enthusiastic, and committed
librarian, who can actively work to acquire items that complement and
augment existing collections; to conserve and preserve special
materials; and to improve patron access our unique and historic library
collections.
Qualifications: An MLS from an ALA-accredited program; at least 1year
experience with special collections; demonstrated knowledge of library
preservation practices; subject expertise in 18th-century American
history and culture; ability to use Web2.0 technologies to showcase
library collections, desirable.

Data Entry Assistant
Historic Mount Vernon seeks a temporary full-time Data Entry Assistant
to aid in a collections online initiative that is scheduled for
completion in 2011. Working with the Collections Manager and curatorial
staff, the Assistant will be responsible for inputting and editing
electronic records in the collections management database and managing
the physical files. The incumbent will use collections files to edit,
update and create electronic collections records; this will involve
inputting curatorial and collections management information including
interpretive text, accession history, locations and conservation
treatment records.
Qualifications: iB.A. in relevant field, attention to detail, and
proficiency with computers and databases required; museum experience
preferred. Experience with Re:Discovery/FoxPro and/or TMS as well
experience and/or interest in American material culture a plus.

Assistant Curator
Historic Mount Vernon seeks an experienced candidate who will work with
the Curator of Fine and Decorative Arts and collections staff to
research, preserve, and enhance the collection, develop furnishing
plans, respond to internal and external inquiries and participate in the
development of exhibitions.
Qualifications: Master of Arts degree in art history, American history,
material culture or museum studies required. Advanced studies in
American decorative arts preferred. Excellent communication skills,
flexibility and reliability required.
