Position Description

The duties for this Contingent-Category I position include the following:

The duties for this full-time Contingent l contract position include the following:
50% Research, purchase and implement a digital asset management system (DAM).

Integration of the hierarchal file structure of current three servers and implementation of digital asset system. Use of a controlled vocabulary to make keywords more consistent and easier to browse. Existing images are retroactively moved into that file structure, with the addition of embedded keywords, captions and credit information. Images currently being produced are renamed, captioned, keyworded and credited. Without a DAM system, none of this embedded information is searchable. Once the DAM system is in place, there will be a web component that will perform on a robust level; images will be viewable at their full resolution and preferred format (rather than limited to less than 20MB jpgs), and galleries can be created for specific clients.

• Image database implementation, organization, labeling and filing of all images/slides/prints.

• Identifying and embedding metadata for all photography (new and legacy).

• Oversight & upkeep of Flickr site /web portal featuring select images, to efficiently respond to requests.

• Rigorous de-duping and editing of images to greatly reduce the volume of images on the server.

COMPONENTS: Slide collection - Create high resolution retrievable images for Filemaker pro database once it is merged with the new DAM system. Current low-resolution images in Filemaker Pro cannot be used for web or print; need to select representative images from each collection and produce high resolution scans for database. 35mm color print binders, negative and photographs - Identify specific people and provide descriptive information about the events, and add this data to the index. Gather pertinent information and input into database to make these archived images detailed and aid search. Black and white print collection - Maintaining searchable index of black and white print collection currently housed at University Archives.

20% Handle external and university-wide photo requests, print orders, and image scanning

15% Photo, art and image research for publications, communications, marketing or web needs

10% Photography and photo assisting with photo shoots and lighting equipment • Executing faculty and staff portraits on request for unit publications • Photography for campus events and other image assignments

 5% Other duties as assigned

RATIONALE

Image Archivist/ Photo Assistant

The Image Archivist /Photo Assistant position is critical to the success of our unit. This position is primarily responsible for organizing our digital assets and image library, providing timely response to image requests, inputting searchable image metadata for future image research and retrieval. This position supports the mission of the University Relations unit as well as the University of Maryland in acting as the central location for requesting and providing select iconic campus, student, faculty and research imagery that promotes and brands the university for internal and external constituencies. Response time is critical in answering media and stakeholders requests for high-quality imagery and visuals, and the organization and implementation of a central searchable image database is critical. The transition from print and slide imagery to digital imagery has created multiple and varied archives of photography, and electronic media has necessitated even quicker turnarounds. This position will have the primary responsibility for organizing and integrating all image resources in our unit in order to provide a single efficient, searchable database that encompasses the varied storage areas that currently exist. The image archivist will primarily assist all units in Marketing and Communications with accessing and retrieval of suitable, quality images to answer the multiple and varied requests that our division handles, as well as implement a system that is easily accessible to all staff. Professional photography experience is not necessary, but is a benefit for this position.
