Job Announcement *--- Processing Archivist (Hourly)*

The Historical Manuscripts Unit of the University of Maryland Libraries 
is seeking a self-motivated individual to work 20 hours/week as a 
*Processing Archivist.*   The position will work with the archives of 
the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America (UBCJA).

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: Working under the supervision of the Curator 
of Historical Manuscripts, the Processing Archivist will arrange, 
describe, preserve, re-house, and otherwise process to professional 
archival standards the UBCJA archives. Assists the Curator in preparing 
a detailed processing plan and in developing progress reports to be 
delivered to the UBCJA on a semi-annual basis.  The archivist will 
produce a detailed EAD finding aid, provide reference services to 
researchers interested in the collection, determine materials suitable 
for digitization, and periodically supervise a student assistant.  There 
may also be an opportunity to develop an exhibit related to the 
processing project. 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:  Must be able to tolerate occasional dirty/dusty 
conditions.  Must be able to lift a minimum of 40 lbs. 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:  Is responsible for periodically 
supervising the work of a student assistant.

QUALIFICATIONS: Must have a thorough knowledge of archival theory and 
practice.  Must be able to work effectively with others in a team 
setting.  Demonstrated excellence in oral and written communication 
skills and in assisting researchers in a special collections setting.  
Must be able to manage a broad variety of tasks in response to varying 
time pressures with shifting priorities and changing constraints.  Must 
have basic computer skills including knowledge of MS office products.

EDUCATION: Required: Candidate must hold or be currently working towards 
an ALA-accredited master's degree in library science with an emphasis on 
archives/special collections; or a master's degree in American history, 
American studies, or other related discipline with experience in 
archives, archival course work, or archival certificate. 

EXPERIENCE: Required: Prior archival processing experience in an 
archives/special collections repository.  A thorough understanding of 
archival principles, practices, and archival processing; experience in 
finding aid preparation; and knowledge of electronic access tools 
including Encoded Archival Description (EAD).  Preferred: At least 2 
years of experience processing organizational archives, especially labor 
union archives.  Knowledge of American labor history.  Experience with 
MS-Excel, MS-Access, or other database management and spreadsheet 
software; digitizing archives and manuscript materials for reference, 
preservation, or exhibit purposes. Experience  working with EAD. 
Supervisory experience in an archives or special collections setting. 

A one year commitment to the position is also required.  Candidates who 
can commit to at least two years will be given preference.

Hourly pay scale of $15 - 18, depending on qualifications and 
experience. This is an hourly position only. There are no health, 
retirement, tuition remission, or vacation benefits.  This position is 
principally funded by a generous donation to the University of Maryland 
Libraries from the UBCJA. **
