The FBI is offering unpaid internships for Summer 2011. The deadline for applying is Friday, November 19th at 11:59pm. You must be a MLS student and not have graduated before December 2011. FBI ACADEMY, LIBRARY UNIT INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

The FBI Academy Library's mission is to provide access to resources that reflect a broad range of perspectives, viewpoints, and approaches; to provide professional reference services in response to research requests; to provide instruction in the use of resources, with an emphasis on the informed evaluation of information sources; and to promote communication and cooperation among libraries in order to share law enforcement information and resources. The FBI Library serves as an active and involved library and resource center for all 30,000+ FBI employees. The Library's specialized collection of 45,000 items related to criminal justice and law enforcement can be accessed by viewing the online catalog on our website. The Unit offers a full-time, ten-week internship program. This is a VOLUNTEER Internship Program that brings students to work at the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia.

 

Program Overview

 

The Library Unit Internship Program offers students pursuing a Master’s degree in Library Science an opportunity to gain valuable work experience in the FBI’s Library. A variety of duties could be assigned based on the special interests and talents of the successful candidate. Options include: working with the special collections; archival work; acquisitions; assisting with informational requests from Academy staff and the law enforcement community; updating and preparing bibliographies; dealing with Government Printing Office documents; managing some circulation functions; planning and implementing web content and design; assisting with bibliographic instruction classes; space planning; cataloging; and other duties. The intern would also be able to take advantage of special presentations, lectures, seminars, and other programs at the FBI Academy during their internship.

 

All applicants must be enrolled currently in a graduate program working towards a Master’s degree in Library Science. You cannot have graduated prior to completion on the internship program.

 

Work hours are from 8:00am – 4:30pm, Monday to Friday.

 

How to Apply

Headquarters and Field Office locations may consider students for their identified positions all across the United States. This year we are asking that you apply to the nearest field office closest to your permanent address or school where you will be residing for the summer. Interns will be responsible for securing your own housing arrangements.

You will be required to complete the following documents to be considered for the 2011 Volunteer Internship Program if you are contacted for an interview by an FBI employee.

Selection Process

Candidates must submit their completed on line documents by the deadline date (11/19/2010). The most competitive candidates will be selected directly for the program or invited to interview. A selection committee will base their decisions upon life/work experience, academic achievement, and demonstrated and expressed skills. If you are selected for the program you will receive a conditional offer letter to serve as a volunteer in the program. All travel expenses are to be done by the student-intern. Interviews will be conducted about four weeks after the application deadline. Every effort is made to give selectees two weeks notice prior to the interview. The selection committee will make the final determination among those candidates interviewed. Those students who are not selected will be notified by an FBI employee. Students who are selected will receive a conditional offer letter to serve as a volunteer in the program. The initial offer is conditional because candidates selected must undergo an extensive FBI Background Investigation and receive an FBI Top Secret Clearance in order to be eligible to participate in the program. The FBI Field Office nearest to the student's school will contact the student within about a month of the selection to arrange a preliminary processing appointment. Final official notification of acceptance into the program is contingent upon the successful completion of the background investigation. Selectees should expect to start around the middle of June 2011.
