Position: Education Librarian

GENERAL SUMMARY
While Teacher U currently operates in collaboration with Hunter College, the organization is in the process of applying for permission to operate as an independent graduate school of education. Given permission to operate independently, the Education Librarian will be responsible for creating the new library for the institution and for ensuring that the library meets the standards and expectations of the higher education community.
This is an outstanding opportunity to play an integral role in public education reform, as the Education Librarian shall build a new capability at Teacher U. The Librarian will establish library goals and initiatives to fully meet the needs of all library constituents. S/he will lead the library in establishing future plans for providing essential support for learning, research, and scholarship. The Librarian will provide overall supervision of all library staff and activities. S/he should be a dynamic leader who possesses a clear and forward-looking understanding of the role of university libraries in enhancing the core mission of higher education and who has a successful record introducing innovative and effective technology in library services, building collections with a predominantly electronic focus, and supporting and facilitating innovative research and pedagogical endeavors.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Collection development
Select and acquire materials that support the Teacher U curriculum;
Review, select, and procure appropriate electronic and print resources;
Maintain a collection development policy that is consistent with the librarys mission;
Seek out opportunities for reciprocal agreements with consortia and individual libraries;
Serve as a corporate knowledge manager, identifying Teacher U knowledge capital and ensuring that documents and artifacts are folded into our library collection;
Work closely with the Instructional Media team to ensure that relevant videos are included in our library collection;
Develop understanding of key pedagogical taxonomies (e.g. Lemovs Teach Like a Champion) and use these taxonomies to enhance organization of library collection; and
Work collaboratively with Teacher U instructors to identify electronic, video, and print resources that are available in our collections and best suited to enhance instruction.
Library implementation and support
Develop a 3-year plan for building and maintaining the library that is aligned with Teacher Us organizational goals;
Plan and oversee Teacher Us library budget;
Work closely with Teacher Us Teaching and Learning team to establish library services that support instruction;
Collaborate with Teacher Us Technology Team to implement appropriate library technologies (e.g. integrated library system, authentication) and technology support;
Provide library instructional sessions and work with Teacher U faculty to establish a solid information literacy plan that is embedded into the Teacher U curriculum; and
Manage library staff, as needed.
Systems building and standards compliance
Ensure that library meets all standards necessary for accreditations that Teacher U may seek;
Develop system for evaluating ongoing effectiveness and utilization of library resources;
Provide reference services through both traditional and electronic means;
Coordinate with the Technology Team to report, isolate, and resolve any library-related support cases (including both end-user issues and deeper technical problems); and
Ensure that all library resources meet all Teacher U Technological Standards, specifically in terms of quality assurance and application development.
QUALIFICATIONS
First and foremost, the Education Librarian must share the teams sense of urgency about the need to improve student achievement through phenomenal teacher training. Additionally, candidates for the position must have the following:
Master of Library Science Degree, with preference for an additional advanced degree in a relevant subject area;
Experience and interest in professional development for adult learners, ideally in an education environment;
A track record of proven organizational skills, and an interest in the development of systems to manage overlapping work streams;
Demonstrated experience with integrated library systems (ILS) and authentication mechanisms (e.g. EZproxy);
An understanding of optimal resource vendors for teacher education and K-12 subject areas;
The ability to thrive in a fast-paced, unstructured business environment, without formal training or orientation;
A team player ready to accept constructive criticism, work on tight timelines, and pitch in, if necessary, in areas not restricted to pre-defined domains;
A demonstrated passion for urban education and closing the achievement gap; and
A high level of zest, grit, hope, gratitude, enthusiasm, and humor.
