NOAA Oceanography Internships



NOAA in partnership with MPOWIR (Mentoring Physical Oceanography Women to Increase Retention) is pleased to announce several internship opportunities. Two junior scientists will be chosen for internships at AOML, GFDL or PMEL. Applicants choose from eight opportunities to work on a project of mutual interest.  Interns will be integrated into an ongoing research program for a period of 8 to 10 weeks, during which they will be supervised and mentored by a designated NOAA senior scientist.  Interns will also collaborate with the researcher to work toward the goal of a coauthored publication.



To be considered for this opportunity, applicants must be female scientists currently enrolled in a graduate program at a U.S. institution and self-identify as a physical oceanographer. Diversity Internship

The Consortium for Ocean Leadership together with the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program - U.S.Implementing Organization (IODP-USIO) is currently accepting applications for the Diversity Internship, which is designed to expose university minority students to careers in scientific ocean drilling by providing them with a 10-12 week educational and career-building experience at one of the institutions that comprises the IODP-USIO.



The first Diversity Internship will be in Science Communications and will take place at the Consortium for Ocean Leadership in Washington, D.C. beginning in June 2011 (specific start and end dates are flexible). The selected Intern will work closely for 10-12-weeks (with the possibility of an extension if funding is available) with a mentor from the IODP-USIO’s Communications group to conceive, develop, and disseminate new materials that help to heighten the national and international visibility of IODP. (IODP, one of the world’s largest international marine research programs, is dedicated to advancing understanding of Earth’s processes through scientific drilling of the ocean floor).
