General Information:
The Chemistry Education Research Group is led by Dr. Bonnie Dixon of the Chemistry Department, with Dr. Mike Stieff of the Learning Sciences Research Institute at the University of Illinois, Chicago. Group projects center around investigating students' skills and strategies used for spatial problem solving in organic chemistry and the relationships between strategy choice, achievement, spatial ability, and sex. Specifically, the group is exploring the impact of differential training in imagistic and analytic strategy use on student strategy preference and achievement in the organic chemistry classroom at UMD. Secondly, the group is investigating the use of models in solving spatial organic chemistry problems. Group research methods include problem solving interviews, classroom observations and laboratory experiments.
Job Responsibilities:
Our group is seeking 1-2 undergraduate research assistants to aid in chemistry education research. Student researchers will primarily be responsible for analysis of video data and data entry. Additional responsibilities, including co-conducting psychological laboratory experiments, etc., may be assigned based on experience.
Job Qualifications:
Completion of Introductory Chemistry and the first semester of Organic Chemistry with a grade of “A” or “B” is required. Previous experience in video and/or data analysis is a plus, though not required.
Compensation
This position is offered as an undergraduate research position. Selected applicant(s) will register for CHEM399B: Introduction to Chemical Research (2 credits) with Dr. Bonnie Dixon.
