Research Librarian
The University of Maryland School of Law, Thurgood Marshall Law Library seeks a highly motivated, creative, professional to serve as a Research Librarian. The position is within the library’s Research Services Department and reports to the Associate Director for Research Services. The School of Law, located on the campus of the University of Maryland in Baltimore, is a vibrant institution with a commitment to innovative specialty programs, outstanding clinical legal education, and public service. Maryland's faculty are prolific scholars in a variety of legal fields.
Research Librarians provide extensive support to faculty and students in a library offering innovative services. The Research Department consists of six professional librarians, three research fellows who provide editing assistance for faculty publications, an instructional technology specialist, and an administrative assistant. Librarians are responsible for teaching a required graded research course to first year students and for teaching Advanced Legal Research, which students are required to take prior to graduation. A library liaison program assigns librarians to faculty, student-edited journals, the clinical law program, and courses in which students are required to conduct research.
Responsibilities: Work closely with faculty and students to provide reference and research assistance. Teach sections in the first-year research program as well as Advanced Legal Research. Participate in the library's liaison program. Share responsibility for collection development and for staffing of the User Services Desk. Assist with other Research Services and Law Library functions and projects as needed.
Minimum Qualifications:
· J.D. and masters degree in library or information science from accredited schools.
· Working knowledge of legal materials and strategies needed by law faculty and students.
· Ability to teach basic and advanced legal research.
· Demonstrated enthusiasm for promoting the information resources and emerging technologies of the twenty-first century to both faculty and students.
· Prefer law library and teaching experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Ability to work independently and collegially;
Strong service orientation and excellent interpersonal skills;
Ability to multitask, set priorities, and complete tasks in a rapidly changing environment;
Excellent oral and written communication skills;
Familiarity with course management systems, collaborative software, social networking, and other technologies used in academic environments.
Salary and Benefits:
Salary is competitive and is commensurate with qualifications and experience. Comprehensive benefits package. The position is a 12-month library faculty appointment. The successful candidate will be expected to meet library and university requirements for permanent status and promotion. A candidate with prior professional accomplishments may be considered for initial appointment at a level above Librarian I.
