About Dean & Company

Dean & Company is a strategy consulting firm with a unique mix of both traditional business strategy development and a range of investing advisory work; our clients include large corporations, technology start-ups, and private equity funds. We work with senior executives to dramatically and sustainably improve their company’s performance, often in situations where they are facing new, complex, and unstructured problems or opportunities. Our fact-based, analytical, and hands-on approach, combined with our commitment to create actionable solutions and to work with our clients to see them through implementation, provides a compelling and unique value proposition.

The firm’s capabilities span a range of industries and business issues. We have established practice areas for our major industries of focus—these are currently financial services, life sciences, private equity, and telecommunications and technology. The centerpiece of our private equity practice is our affiliation with Lindsay Goldberg, a multibillion dollar private equity fund. We see our success in investment work as direct testimony to the real-world, bottom-line impact of our work. We also have capability and experience across a range of business issues including pricing, business development, competitor analysis, benchmarking, distribution, product planning, and M & A.

As with any successful entity, Dean & Company can attribute most of its sustained achievement to a single factor: the quality of our people. Beginning with a highly experienced management team, Dean & Company focuses on attracting and retaining professionals of the highest caliber. The diversity of our individuals’ backgrounds and skill sets further enables us to address the type of new, complex, and often unstructured problems that our clients face.

About the Analyst Role

The Analyst is at the core of Dean & Company’s team-based approach to business problem solving. Analysts conduct research and analysis and build topic/issue expertise in support of case team objectives. Analysts should have strong quantitative skills. Quantitative skills can be demonstrated through majoring in science, math, or engineering or by performing well in highly quantitative coursework in other majors or through strong quantitative standardized test scores.

During the first year or two, most Analysts will work on a variety of strategy development problems (e.g. competitor analysis, pricing policy, company valuations, operations capacity and cost, distribution, product planning, business development and marketing) in multiple industries. The Analyst position typically involves significant client exposure and responsibility from the outset.

Analysts at Dean & Company work within case teams, both internal and client staffed, and take responsibility for an individual module of the casework. Case teams sizes vary according to project, but generally consist of four to six Dean & Company professionals. Analysts work on one case at a time, and more experienced Analysts who are performing at close to the Associate (post MBA) level may begin to supervise newer Analysts.

The Analyst position is an excellent learning and career opportunity and is designed to lead to positions of increasing responsibility. Promotion is based on performance and skill-level, not tenure, determines an individual’s career path. It is not uncommon for high quality Analysts to be promoted directly to Associate without a need to return to business school.

Travel varies based on client and firm needs and averages two to three days per week. The office culture is non-hierarchical; all consultants are encouraged to play an active role in driving client solutions and work closely with the firm’s leadership to achieve this end. Office attire is business casual, in keeping with the open culture.
