Professor Eddy Arnold will describe how a
multidisciplinary
team of investigators used structure-based approaches to design two
anti-AIDS
drugs. Both drugs are remarkably effective against drug-resistant
variants of HIV and work by targeting the HIV reverse transcriptase
enzyme. Dr. Arnold led a team that used X-ray crystallography to
visualize
how candidate drug molecules block the action of reverse transcriptase.
Dr. Arnold’s daughter Lizzie Arnold is a senior biology and psychology
major at
the University of Maryland.
