Sam Kean, Author of The Disappearing Spoon to speak

2nd Annual Lee Hellman Lecture in the Life Sciences
Presented by the College Park Scholars–Life Sciences Program
Wednesday April 4, 2012
4:30 PM
CHM 1407

College Park Scholars–Life Sciences is proud to host the 2nd Annual Lee Hellman Lecture in the Life Sciences. This lecture celebrates the work and life of Dr. Lee Hellman, Emeritus Professor of Entomology and Founding Director of College Park Scholars–Life Sciences. The Hellman lecture brings to campus an author who has written a book or an article on a life sciences-related topic that is accessible to and appropriate for a first- or second-year university student. We are pleased to announce that this year’s Hellman Lecturer is Mr. Sam Kean, the author of the New York Times national bestseller, The Disappearing Spoon and Other True Tales of Madness, Love, and the History of the World from the Periodic Table of the Elements.

The lecture will be held at 4:30 PM in the large chemistry lecture room (CHM 1407) preceded at about 3:45 PM with light refreshments available in the adjacent Chemistry Atrium.

Sam Kean collected mercury from broken thermometers as a child and is now a writer in Washington. He has written for The New York Times Magazine, Science, and Slate, and has been featured on NPR’s Radiolab and All Things Considered.

Books can be purchased at the event and Mr. Kean will be available for a short time after the lecture to sign them.
