National Socio-Environmental Synthesis Center

The University of Marylandís National Socio-environmental Synthesis Center (www.SESYNC.org) solicits applications for two undergraduate internship positions in the area of land planning and sustainable growth practices. This is a collaborative program with the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commissionís Prince Georgeís Planning Department in Upper Marlboro, MD, where interns will spend the majority of their time. The positions are full time (40 hours/week) during the summer starting in the summer of 2012 and 15 hours per week (approximately, depending on the studentís class schedule) during the school year beginning the fall of 2012. The dates will be based on the schedule of the University of Maryland with some flexibility allowed to accommodate the studentís or the Planning Departmentís schedule. The pay rate for the interns will be $10.50 per hour paid in full by SESYNC. Free parking is provided. Upper Marlboro is accessible via local bus routes. The two internships are in the following areas:

Green Infrastructure Plan Update Intern: Working closely with Planning Department staff, this intern will be assisting with the pre-planning work for the upcoming update to the Prince Georgeís County 2005 Countywide Green Infrastructure Plan. Research will be needed regarding best practices in green infrastructure planning from an ecological perspective and may include research into policy practices regarding environmental site design. Other topics include ecosystem services and the interface between environmental health and human health. An interest in environmental policy and planning is preferred. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are a must. GIS skills are preferred but not required.

General Plan Update Intern: The Plan Prince Georgeís 2035 Team is in the initial phase of updating the countyís 2002 Approved General Plan. The team is seeking an intern who has an economic, financial, or real estate background, that can help to compile and organize financial and economic data related to land use and development in Prince Georgeís County. This project involves many stakeholders from across the entire county, and will expose the student to a variety of experiences including public outreach, employee and citizen engagement, briefings with elected and appointed officials, and other public policy-related interactions. The team is looking for a self-starting student who is organized and responsible. GIS skills are preferred but are not required. If you have an interest in the economic aspect of smart growth and transit oriented development, we are interested in you! http://www.pgplanning.org/Projects/Prince_George_s_County_Approved_General_Plan.htm
