Women's Equality Day 2012 marks 92 years since women won the right to vote. But many suffragists believed voting was only a means to an end. Page Harrington, Executive Director, Sewall-Belmont House & Museum, moderates a panel including Dr. Joy Kinard, Central District Manager, National Capital Parks-East; Dr. Jennifer Lawless, Director, Women & Politics Institute, American University; and Jennifer Krafchik, Assistant Director and Director of Collections of the Sewall-Belmont House and Museum. The panel will discuss the ways that women have worked with, within, and outside of the government to foster change that would improve women's lives.

The Burning of Washington: The British Invasion of 1814

In August 1814, British troops completed a 50-mile march to capture the young American capital. In no time, British arsonists set off an inferno whose glow was seen miles away. This attack was one of the defining moments in the coming-of-age of the United States, and Anthony Pitch tells the dramatic story in The Burning of Washington. A book signing follows the program.
