The Indiana University Libraries seek a collaborative and service-minded individual to work alongside librarians, faculty, and university partners to initiate, sustain, and assess the libraries’ support of student learning in undergraduate courses, with a focus on learning in the first year. The Undergraduate Education Librarian will investigate and capitalize upon the intersection of information literacy, learning, and orientation for undergraduate students, with an emphasis on creating an effective and sustainable connection between the libraries and targeted undergraduate learning environments and learning communities. Candidates with knowledge of student engagement, pedagogical practices, and assessment of student learning outcomes in general education and discipline-specific contexts will be given the highest consideration. This is a tenure-track position reporting to the Head of Teaching & Learning.

Founded in 1820, Indiana University Bloomington has grown from a small state seminary into the flagship campus of a great public university with over 42,000 students and almost 3,000 faculty. The Indiana University Bloomington Libraries (http://www.libraries.iub.edu) are among the leading academic research library systems in North America, having recently been named the top university library by the Association of College and Research Libraries. The IUB Libraries provide strong collections, quality service and instructional programs, and leadership in the application of information technologies. The IU Libraries system consists of eighteen libraries on the Bloomington campus, five libraries in Indianapolis, and a library at each of the other six campuses across the state. The collections support every academic discipline on campus and include more than 6.6 million books, journals, maps, films, and audio/visual materials in over 900 languages. Users can access more than 400 databases, 43,000 electronic journals, and 224,000 electronic books, as well as locally developed digital content.

The IUB Libraries are active members of regional and national associations and consortia including the Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC), the Association of Research Libraries (ARL), the Digital Library Federation (DLF), and is a founding member of HathiTrust, a shared digital repository. IU is the principal investigator for Kuali Open Library Environment (OLE) and is working with academic library partners to develop a next generation open source library management

RESPONSIBILITIES

·         Plan, implement, review, and assess library initiatives for undergraduate students

·         Engage in outreach and development of partnerships to identify and support student learning within general education courses and to establish positive connections between the libraries and undergraduate students

·         Establish collaborative working relationships with library, campus,  and community partners

·         Provide reference services (desk, e-mail, phone, chat, individual consultation), including nights and weekends

·         Develop, teach, and assess library instruction initiatives

·         Supervise and support graduate student instructors in the provision and assessment of library instruction initiatives

·         Investigate opportunities for and coordinate the participation of libraries in first year experience programming campus-wide, including orientation activities and welcome events for new and transfer students

·         Integrate information literacy into first-year experience opportunities, general education curriculum, and campus-wide initiatives in collaboration with subject librarians
QUALIFICATIONS

·         ALA-accredited Master's degree in Library Science (MLS)

·         Knowledge of instructional design, pedagogy, and assessment principles for effective information literacy instruction

·         Awareness of trends and best practices related to librarians involved in curricular planning

·         Ability to work in a team environment and build working relationships with campus colleagues

·         Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills

·         Ability to communicate and work effectively with diverse populations

·         Ability to handle multiple responsibilities in a rapidly changing environment

·         Ability to use a variety of technological applications, both in and beyond the classroom context

·         Ability to meet standards for achieving tenure and promotion
SALARY AND BENEFITS

Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience and education; benefits include a university healthcare plan, university-funded base retirement plan, a 100% university paid group life insurance plan, and a generous paid time off plan.
