Subject: [ISCHOOLDISCUSSION] Invitation to talk by Michelle Hamiel (Library Manager of Woodlawn Branch of Baltimore County Public Library): "Code of Professional Ethics: Do we really uphold them?" [November 12th]
Hi all,
Michelle Hamiel, who is the manager of the Woodlawn Branch of the Baltimore County Public Library, will be coming to speak at our LBSC 601 class on Monday, November 12th from 5:30 to 7:00 PM. In her talk, which is entitled "Code of Professional Ethics: Do we really uphold them?", Michelle will discuss ALA's Code of Professional Ethics for Librarians (http://www.ala.org/advocacy/proethics/codeofethics/codeethics), particularly focusing on "what it means to truly allow the code of ethics to guide our work as professionals."
Please join us! Our class takes place in room #3203 in Building 3 on the Shady Grove campus (http://shadygrove.umd.edu/about/visit/directions). There is a parking garage right near the building -- the parking is free, just avoid the spaces that specify particular restrictions.

Michelle's Bio:
"As a librarian, I have worked to make a difference in the communities in which I have served. I am dedicated to improving the quality of life of the public I serve. From making sure the Book Mobile, gets to a senior Korean population, to assuring the library is a welcoming place for teens, I am known as an innovator and an agent for change.
I always advocate for changes that will improve public service. Creative and innovative, I participated on several teams that institutionalized important changes in the Baltimore County Library system, including the diversity steering committee. Selected as a Maryland Library Leadership scholar and fellow of the University of Maryland, College Park, and I received my MLS in 2001. I was later selected to participate in Urban Libraries Council’s Leadership Institute. It was at the institute that I learned that nothing is more valuable than making yourself known to community leaders and within the community you serve.
I am currently an adjunct professor at Sojourner Douglas College where I teach, Library Research to students who believe Google is the answer. The storyteller in me forces me to tell anyone who will listen; just how valuable the library continues to be. My service philosophy … Everyone has baggage; some baggage is heavier than others. If I can lighten a load by meeting people where they are, giving them what they want, and smiling, as a librarian, I couldn’t ask for a better day!"

Hope to see many of you there!
