Honors Opens Exciting New Seminar to all CMNS Students

Interested students who are not a part of the University Honors College
but who have a GPA of 3.4 are invited to enroll in HONR 238E by
permission; please email Dean Hebert ([log in to unmask]) to request
permission to enroll.  This course will apply as elective credit, and does
not fill major or general education requirements.

HONR238E Science in the News, and the News in Science

This course introduces students to a variety of science topics that are
currently being covered by news media. We explore the science behind the
news story, why the science is newsworthy, and the process of getting a
science story into the news. This will be an opportunity to learn about
how basic and applied scientific research has implications for our lives
beyond the classroom, our society, and the planet's biodiversity. The
writing assignments are designed to help develop writing skills that will
be useful throughout the students' careers. Course enrichments include
field trips and guest lecturers such as: a visit to the Newseum in
Washington, D.C.; a visit to a congressional office talk to the science
staff person; possibly a field trip to the National Science Foundation;
one or more presentations by Public Affairs Specialist, Press Officer, or
Communications Staff; and a presentation by a science writer.
