The University of Maryland╣s National Socio-Environmental Synthesis Center
(SESYNC) is accepting applications for its joint Summer Internship Program
with the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission╣s Prince
George╣s Planning Department in Upper Marlboro, MD. The two internships
are in the following areas:

Green Infrastructure Plan Update Intern: Working closely with Planning
Department staff, this intern will be assisting with the pre-planning work
for the upcoming update to the Prince George╣s County 2005 Countywide
Green Infrastructure Plan. The focus of this internship will be on
evaluating trends using GIS. In addition, research will be needed
regarding best practices in green infrastructure planning from an
ecological perspective and may include research into policy practices
regarding environmental site design. Other topics include ecosystem
services and the interface between environmental health and human health.
An interest in environmental policy and planning is preferred. Excellent
written and verbal communication skills are a must. Advanced GIS skills
are preferred but not required; however, a basic knowledge of GIS is
necessary.

Community Planning Intern: The Prince George╣s Planning Department
completes a variety of community-based planning projects every year. There
are several on-going projects that will result in recommendations to the
Planning Board and County Council regarding community revitalization and
transit-oriented development. Working closely with community planners,
this intern will be providing much needed support to various project
teams. Tasks could include conducting research on topics related to
transit-oriented development, community health and revitalization,
implementation of planning recommendations and/or public outreach. The
Planning Department is looking for a self-starting student who is
organized and responsible. GIS skills are preferred but are not required.

Additionally, interns will participate in weekly Internship Program
events, including field trips, seminars, and trips to SESYNC facilities in
Annapolis, where interns will be introduced to the socio-environmental
synthesis research approach, and will have the opportunity to meet
researchers at the Center.

Program Details: The positions are full time (40 hours/week) from May 31-
Aug. 9, 2013, and undergraduate interns will be paid $10.50/hour. Interns
will be selected based upon the strength of their academic record and
achievements, and demonstrated interest in environmental sustainability
and socio-environmental issues.

To Apply: Please submit: 1) a resume, 2) statement of career interests
(less than one page), 3) a copy of transcripts, and 4) a letter of
recommendation. Parts 1-3 should be submitted as a single pdf labeled with
last name, first name at
http://www.sesync.org/internship-program-application by midnight on
Sunday, March 3, 2013. Letters of recommendation should be sent by March
3, 2013 to [log in to unmask] with the intern╣s last name and │MNCPPC
SUMMER INTERNSHIP▓ in the subject line. Finalists for the internship will
be interviewed in mid-March, and final selections will be made in early
April.
