CARNEGIE ENDOWMENT FOR INTERNATIONAL PEACE - JUNIOR FELLOWS PROGRAM -

Each year the Carnegie Endowment offers 8-10 one-year fellowships to highly
qualified graduating seniors and individuals who have graduated during the
past academic year. Carnegie Junior Fellows provide research assistance to
senior researchers working on the Carnegie Endowment's projects such as
non-proliferation, democracy building, trade, US leadership, China-related
issues and Russian/Eurasian studies. (See the list of next year’s specific
project areas below.)

Junior Fellows have the opportunity to conduct research for books, co-author
journal articles and policy papers, participate in meetings with high-level
officials, contribute to congressional testimony and organize briefings
attended by scholars, activists, journalists and government officials. Junior
Fellows spend one year (beginning August 1st, 2014) at the Carnegie Endowment
in Washington, DC. Positions are full-time and include a salary and benefits
package (see details further below).

Carnegie Junior Fellows are selected through a highly competitive process
from a pool of nominees from close to 300 colleges.
IMPORTANT: Applicants for the Carnegie Junior Fellows Program must be
nominated by their University.  The University of Maryland, College Park can
nominate two (2) students for the national competition.

WHO CAN APPLY: All nationalities eligible; Current Seniors AND alumni who
graduated in the 12-13 academic year; minimum 3.8 GPA;  applicants should
have coursework and other specific experiences strongly related to one of the
2014-15 project areas (see below);

DEADLINE TO APPLY FOR MARYLAND NOMINATION: December 10, 2013

2014 – 2015 RESEARCH AREAS: Candidates should have significant coursework
and/or other experiences in any of the various project areas described below.
In addition, quantitative and/or advanced language skills may be required for
some positions. Please read these additional preferences closely.

-Democracy
-Nuclear Policy
-Energy and Climate
-Middle East Studies - Native or near-native Arabic language skills
essential.
-South Asian Studies - Strong background in international relations, strategy
and military issues, comparative politics, and/or international political
economy is essential. Quantitative data manipulation skills essential
(fluency in R, SPSS, or Stata a plus). Note: foreign language skills not
required.
-China Studies (Asia Program) - Mandarin Chinese reading skills a huge plus.
-Japan Studies (Asia Program) - Japanese language skills required.
-Southeast Asian Studies (Asia Program) - Background in politics and
economics of the region and knowledge of quantitative techniques a plus.
-Economics (Asia Program) - Mandarin Chinese reading skills a huge plus.
-Russian/Eurasian Studies - Excellent Russian language skills required.

SALARY AND BENEFITS: The monthly salary is $3,083 ($37,000 annually) subject
to federal, state and local taxes. A generous benefits package is provided,
including medical, dental and life insurance as well as vacation leave.
Junior Fellows are responsible for their own housing arrangements.
