Subject: Undergraduate Life Sciences Lecture on The Bizarre World of
Parasites, Nature's Most Dangerous Creatures
Description:
The Lee Hellman Lecture in the Life Sciences celebrates the work and life of
Dr. Lee Hellman, Emeritus Professor of Entomology and Founding Director of
College Park Scholars–Life Sciences.
This year's Hellman Lecturer is author, blogger, and New York Times columnist
Carl Zimmer.
The title of Mr. Zimmer’s lecture is “Possessed: The Biology of Parasite
Manipulation.”
The unusual lifecycles of parasites make for interesting stories. Reducing
the burden from parasites has been a significant driving force for evolution
since their first appearance. Parasites survive by taking control over other
organisms for their own reproduction, and humans are certainly not immune.
The lecture begins at 4:30 PM in the large chemistry lecture room (CHM 1407)
preceded at 4:00 PM with light refreshments in the adjacent Chemistry Atrium.
Mr. Zimmer will be available after the lecture to sign books that can be
purchased at the event.
