Student Research Assistant
Organic farming, with focus on weed ecology
Full-time, May-Sept 2014
Description:
Positions are available for undergraduate assistants (paid interns) to assist
with multiple field studies that examine effects of cover cropping and
tillage on a range of ecological and environmental factors in organic
agriculture systems. This will be a good opportunity to learn about the
ecology of agricultural systems, the design and implementation of field
research, and how to think about the world as a scientist. Specific field
duties will include counting and identifying arthropods (including
herbivores, spiders, and pollinators), counting and identifying weeds in the
field and greenhouse, measuring greenhouse gas emissions, and assisting with
plot maintenance. You may also be involved in sorting of samples in the
laboratory and data entry.
Qualifications:
You should be genuinely interested in field research!
You should be able to spend several hours at a time outside in summertime
conditions (heat, humidity, etc.)
You should be able to engage in walking, lifting, bending, and other physical
activity
You should be able to take clear data and notes, and ask questions when you
don’t understand a task
You should be willing to engage in the scientific process and make a positive
contribution to the team
