Opening for an AmeriCorps*Robotics Coordinator
Full Time Year of Service with Stipend at a Maryland Non-Profit

The following position is a one year (July 2014-July 2015) AmeriCorps* VISTA
position at the JHU-Center for Educational Outreach in Baltimore, MD and
sponsored by Greater Homewood Community Corporation (GHCC). The mission of
the JHU-Center for Educational Outreach is to engage JHU faculty and students
to inspire and prepare K-12 students in STEM education and careers.

Help middle and high school kids explore science and engineering with Robots!
Join AmeriCorps and allow Baltimore City achieve more.

The VISTA Member will be responsible for: • Working with an undergraduate
student group and the existing robotics program at the 29th Street Community
Center. • Recruiting a permanent coach for the existing robotics program
• Evaluating existing partnerships, while expanding and developing new
partnerships for the Robotics Club. • In addition to evaluating the
effectiveness of the program, the VISTA will be responsible for expanding the
documentation from the pilot year • After reviewing the documentation, the
information will be compiled into a resource manual for coaches. This manual
will be distributed to potential robotics coaches to implement community
robotics programs in new communities around Baltimore

   The goal of this project is to create sustainable community-based robotics
programs for Baltimore City School children who may not otherwise have the
opportunity to engage in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM)
enrichment programs. The VISTA will work with the Center for Educational
Outreach to run a pilot program in the Harwood neighborhood, using the
Barclay Recreational Center as the home base. During the course of the
project the VISTA will create training manuals to be used by other
communities that want to create a community-based robotics program.

AmeriCorps*VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) is not a job per se, but
a full time national service opportunity. Benefits include: living allowance,
relocation assistance, health coverage, $55/month travel stipend, choice of
an education award or cash stipend, and non-competitive eligibility for
federal employment upon completion. Preferred candidates will have a college
degree or equivalent work experience, leadership potential, and motivation to
serve.
