Subject: GIS Day Tutorial - BSOS, University of Maryland
Description:
We invite you to join the Department of Geographical Sciences at the
University of Maryland in celebrating International GIS Day on 11/19/14, by
learning through our online GIS Tutorial. The Tutorial was developed by two
Geographical Sciences alumni, Jon Nordling and Michael Humber. Please feel
free to explore the tutorial and share with your students as you see fit. The
tutorial can be found here: http://geoodk.com/gisday/tutorials.html and will
be available at any time for your use in class.
The tutorial will guide you through basic data collection and web mapping
using GeoODK, an open source platform developed in part at the University of
Maryland, and ArcGIS Online tools, some of which are freely available online.
By following this tutorial, you will learn how to:
· Create an online form
· Collect field data using the GeoODK Collect app for Android
· Download and convert your data into a geo-enabled format
· Build an ArcGIS Online web map
· Use your web map to create a map journal application
At the end of the tutorial is a map journal based on the Gettysburg Auto
Tour. It was created using the methods described in the tutorial and is an
example of an easy but effective real world application for mobile data
collection and web GIS.
For more information on the GeoODK data collection software, please visit
www.geoodk.com. To learn more about ArcGIS Online, please visit
http://www.arcgisonline.com.
Feel free to direct any questions to Jon Nordling or Mike Humber on the
tutorial. Feel free to reach out to me or our Director of Undergraduate
Studies, Dr. Ronald Luna, for more information on in person and online GIS
courses at the University of Maryland.
We hope you and your students enjoy exploring GIS through the tutorial. Happy
GIS Day,
-Rachel
