Subject: NIH Post-baccalaureate IRTA Scientific Database Developer/ Curator

Description:
The Undiagnosed Diseases Program (UDP) is a NIH translational science
initiative to advance healthcare using the most recent biomedical and
technology innovations. Ultimately, the UDP offers patients the hope of a
diagnosis and the possibility of therapeutic strategies. In return, patients
provide UDP researchers the opportunity to gain new insights about genetic
and biochemical mechanisms of disease and insights into normal cell biology,
biochemistry and physiology. The Undiagnosed Diseases Program Integrated
Collaboration System (UDPICS) was created to support the UDP’s mission. It
is a web-based information management system to enable clinicians and
researchers of all specialties around the world to seamlessly share expertise
and data. UDPICS provides a venue to store and track data and processes in a
single database toward the goal of solving unknown patient disease.

We are looking for a Post-baccalaureate IRTA to work with users to gather
requirements and develop workflows that reflect the UDP’s processes. This
is a great opportunity to work with clinicians, bench scientists, and IT
professionals with wide variety of backgrounds and experiences and be
involved with developing this remarkable information system. This opportunity
will provide recent college graduates who are planning to apply to graduate
or professional (medical/dental/pharmacy) school an opportunity to spend one
or two years performing full-time research at the NIH. Post-baccalaureate
IRTAs/CRTAs work with some of the leading scientists in the world, in an
environment devoted exclusively to biomedical research. For more information
about the IRTA program, please visit
https://www.training.nih.gov/programs/postbac_irta

DUTIES:
1) Interact with administrative, clinical, and laboratory users on developing
workflows
2) Provide user support as needed and train new and existing users
3) Communicate with software vendors for system support, bug fixes, and
feature requests
4) Actively participate in relevant activities of the UDP as a NIH IRTA

REQUIREMENTS (IN ADDITION TO IRTA REQUIREMENTS):
1) Good communication skills and willing to work with and learn from
clinical, laboratory, and bioinformatics users to understand their processes
with a customer service attitude
2) Attention to details and willing to work on computers and learn computer
programming
3) Any programing or database experience is a plus, but not required
