Portola Pharmaceuticals Inc. is a biopharmaceutical company focused on the
development and commercialization of novel therapeutics in the areas of
thrombosis, other hematologic disorders and inflammation for patients who
currently have limited or no approved treatment options. Portola’s goal is
to build an enduring biopharmaceutical company with a foundation of products
and product candidates that significantly advance patient care in the areas
of thrombosis, other hematologic disorders and inflammation. Portola is
headquartered in South San Francisco, California. The summer intern will work
with members of the Chemistry Department to assist in understanding the
structure-activity relationships of a series of small molecule enzyme
inhibitors with the goal of developing novel therapeutics. Using
structure-based design strategies, we will optimize chemical leads for their
potency, selectivity, and pharmacokinetic profile. The activity of the
compounds will be determined using a novel cell based assay. This position
includes housing within walking distance of the company.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Requirements:
-Actively pursuing a Bachelor’s of Science degree
-Completed college coursework in biology, chemistry, biochemistry or other
related areas
-Experience in synthetic chemistry including the synthesis, purification, and
characterization of small molecules
-An understanding of analytical techniques such as LC-MS and NMR
