Description:
The Office of Science and Engineering Laboratories (OSEL) is the laboratory
at the Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH) of the Food and Drug
Administration. OSEL performs product testing; develops reliable standardized
test methods for CDRH and industry use; performs anticipatory scientific
investigations on emerging technologies; contributes laboratory data to
national and international standards used in CDRH decision making; provides
scientific and technical training for CDRH staff members; and maintains
laboratory collaborations and relationships with scientific researchers in
academia and other Federal laboratories. OSEL also coordinates and oversees
CDRH’s activities that support the development of national and
international standards.
Position: Student Volunteer -Analytical Chemist
Division: Division of Biology, Chemistry and Materials Science
Location: Silver Spring, MD
Project: The student will perform studies related to analysis of extractable
and leachable chemicals from materials used in medical devices. Tasks will
include method development and validation for extraction, identification,
quantification of substances contained in polymeric and other materials to
support CDRH’s regulatory mission.
Qualifications:
1. Graduate or undergraduate student (junior or senior) studying
science/engineering
2. Experienced and confident working in the lab, dexterous at handling tools
and setups
3. Adept at independently solving problems, performing experiments and
analyzing data
4. Present at FDA a minimum of 50 hours/month during school and 160
hours/month during summer and committed to a minimum of 1 full summer and 1
full semester (longer if possible).
5. Begin as soon as possible, preferably by February 2018
Additional Information:
1. We provide training on specific instruments and techniques, e.g.:
micropipetting, gravimetric mass measurements using high precision analytical
balances, exhaustive extraction, rotary evaporation, preparation of HPLC
mobile phases, running samples and data analysis using UV-Vis
spectrophotometer, HPLC, GC/MS and LC/MS instruments.
2. All contributing to the experimental results are co-authors in future
publications.
3. This is a volunteer position, which may change to a paid position (at a
rate based on degree of education) dependent on the applicant’s skill level
and experience.
4. We will work with your school so you may receive research credit.
