PSE is organizing a workshop titled “Teaching process modeling in chemical
engineering – Perspectives from academia and industry.” The free workshop
will be held on Monday, May 7th, in Cedar Knolls, NJ. The workshop is meant
to improve awareness of the respective requirements of academia and industry
and to facilitate new graduates' effective transition into industry and
research.

We have a nice lineup of speakers: Rob Johnson (ExxonMobil Research &
Engineering), Ben Weinstein (Procter & Gamble), Sal Garcia (Eli Lily),
Alejandro Cano (PSE), Michael Baldea (UT Austin), Nikos Diangelakis (Texas
A&M), Jim Michaels (U Delaware) and Pieter Schmal (PSE). The goal of this
workshop is to discuss the different ways process modeling is taught in
universities and how this aligns with the needs of industry. In this
context, we consider process models to imply both flowsheet models and
first-principles models (balance equations and constitutive equations).

This workshop is the first US event of its kind. The teaching initiative has
already begun in the UK in cooperation with the IChemE. Prior events in
London have included representatives from ExxonMobil Research & Engineering,
Procter & Gamble, Shell, AstraZeneca, PSE, Imperial College, UC Dublin, TU
Dortmund, TU Denmark, UCL, RWTH Aachen and U Bradford.
