University of Surrey and East China University of Science and Technology
(ECUST) are establishing joint research labs in a number of cutting edge or
emerging research areas for chemical engineering. University of Surrey has
the UK oldest continuous chemical engineering programme. ECUST is a
national champion in chemical engineering in China and most of its academic
schools are closely associated with chemical engineering.

The Department of Chemical and Process Engineering at University of Surrey
is leading the Industry 6th Sense research, a unique UK initiative for
Industry 4.0 in Chemical Engineering involving industry leaders including
Fluor, IBM, Honeywell and Unilever. The Industry 6th Sense research bring
together our world-leading expertise in the areas of digital manufacturing,
big data analytics, process modelling, control and optimisation, industrial
Internet-of-Things, making significant contribution towards Industry 4.0
for Chemical Industries, which is widely recognised as the next
revolutionary technological advancement.

We are currently recruiting postdoctoral research fellowships in Industry
6th sense. The Postdoc Fellow will be jointly supervised by renowned
academics in Surrey and ECUST and will be mainly based in ECUST’s campus at
Shanghai. The Fellow will have full access to the UK research facilities
and visit the UK as required. The fellowship is for 2 or 3 years and the
salary will be comparable to the UK levels depending on the experience. The
Fellow will also expect significant interactions with the industrial
partners. It is expected that this joint postdoctoral training programme
will provide a unique opportunity to early-career researchers, in terms of
development of research excellence, international collaboration capability
and industrial experiences, leading to a successful career in either
academia or industry upon completion of the fellowship. We will help the
Fellow to secure an academic position in China or the UK during the
Fellowship.

The candidates should have a background in Chemical Engineering with strong
programming skills. A PhD in Process System Engineering or Computer Science
will be preferred but other disciplines with strong computing element will
be acceptable. Experiences relating to Industry 4.0 will be desirable. The
candidates must have excellent computer programming skills in at least one
modern language such as Python, C/C++ or Matlab. The working language will
be English; therefore the candidates should have excellent communication
skills both orally and in writing. The candidates should also have
favourable personal attributes including: (i) self-learner and rapid
learner with initiative; (ii) mature, confident and self-motivated; (iii)
excellent work ethnics; and (iv) industrial awareness.

To apply, in the first instance, please send your CV with full publication
record to Dr Tao Chen ([log in to unmask]).
