Subject: Summer life sciences undergraduate research position

Description:
A summer research assistant position is available for an undergraduate
student in the Byung-Eun Kim lab in the Department of Animal and Avian
Sciences. The Kim lab uses a combination of genetics, cell biology, molecular
biology, and biochemical approaches to study regulation of copper transport
and trafficking in animals. Copper is an essential micronutrient. Reductions
in copper uptake, utilization, or excretion can lead to severe human health
consequences, including Wilson's disease, Menkes disease, and impaired
neurological function. The Kim lab offers a variety of projects utilizing C.
elegans, mammalian cell culture, and whole-animal mouse models to study
organismal copper homeostasis.

The ideal candidate would demonstrate academic success in the life sciences,
and more importantly, a strong desire to carry out exciting new research
throughout the pursuit of their undergraduate degree.  Dr. Kim is
particularly interested in students intending to pursue graduate education,
as this position will prepare the student with basic research skills required
to thrive in a research environment.  All training will be provided, although
the student must possess a willingness to learn quickly and take on new
challenges and responsibilities throughout the project.

Ideally the project would be extended over the course of at least two years,
with the goal of making the undergraduate research position a fully
integrated member of the lab. Therefore, early stage students will be highly
