Description:
HJF is seeking a Research Assistant to support the Military HIV Research
Program (MHRP) located at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR)
in Silver Spring, Maryland. HJF provides scientific, technical and
programmatic support services to MHRP.

The Structural Biology group within the US Military HIV Research Program is
seeking a Research Assistant to contribute to ongoing research in our lab in
Silver Spring. The Research Assistant will be involved in the day-to-day
operations of the lab, working with Principal Investigator, Staff Scientist,
Post-Doctoral Fellows and interacting with collaborators from across the
Program. The researcher is expected to assist in experiments from protein
purification, antigenic assessment, immunogen preparation, and structural
studies.

Responsibilities:

Execute experiments, draw initial conclusions, and make recommendations to
senior staff.
Perform a variety of purification protocols as needed for various research
projects.
Operating micropipettes, centrifuges, FPLC, and other types of required
laboratory equipment.
Establish and follow appropriate lab protocols to ensure safe and
reproducible results.
Contribute to the ordering of reagents and other consumables, and keeping
track of inventory.
Assist senior scientists and post-doctoral fellows to evaluate proposals,
monitor projects, and communicate with laboratory points of contact.
Performs most research assignments independently with instructions as to the
general results expected, including collection and organization of data.
Provides basic data analysis and interpretation.
Maintain appropriate documentation and accurate records.
Attends and presents at laboratory meetings and job related trainings.
Maintain current knowledge by participating in scientific trainings or
conferences and reading specialty journals.
Follows all MHRP and WRAIR safety procedures and completes required training
in a timely manner; Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of
equipment and supplies; promotes workplace safety.
Performing other tasks as required
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

The candidate should have strong interpersonal skills and be goal-oriented;
   Laboratory organization and operation knowledge;
Basic protein purification and antigenic assessment knowledge;
Project planning, implementation and data analysis;
Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential.
Minimum Education: Bachelor's degree in Biology, Biochemistry, Biophysics,
or a related field.

Minimum Experience: 0-2 years of professional or academic experience in the
laboratory setting.

Physical Capabilities: Work involves long periods of standing and handling of
numerous chemicals.

Work Environment: Laboratory environment; may require working evenings and
weekends. The candidate may handle biohazardous materials or hazardous
chemicals, and is expected to practice safe handling. The laboratory is
densely populated and will require good interpersonal skills for effective
job performance.

Background: Must have lived in the US 3 out of the past 5 years; eligible to
pass a NACI background.
