Learn about India's leading tiger conservation project, Tiger Matters, from
Dr. Anish Andheria. Dr. Andheria is president of Wildlife Conservation Trust
(WCT), a not-for-profit set up to preserve, protect and conserve wildlife and
fight climate change. USAID's Asia Bureau provided a grant to WCT that
resulted in an increase in tiger numbers in Central India Landscape/Eastern
Ghats Landscape from 688 in 2014 to 1,033 in 2018. Dr. Andheria will share an
important story of hope as we face the planet's sixth great mass extinction
of species. A multi-sectoral approach saved the tiger and can save other
species and conserve the planet as well.

WCT is a Mumbai-based registered public charitable trust dedicated and
committed to the preservation, protection and conservation of wildlife across
India. WCT believes that natural ecosystems are the backbone of India's
water, food, climate, and economic security. Currently, WCT works in and
around 130 national parks and wildlife sanctuaries spread across 23 states of
India and catalyzes path-breaking conservation action.

After completing his Ph.D. from Institute of Chemical Technology, Mumbai, Dr.
Andheria went on to pursue a Master's in Wildlife Biology and Conservation
from the National Center for Biological Sciences (NCBS), Bengaluru. He is a
large carnivore specialist with immense knowledge on predator-prey
relationships.

This event is hosted by the UMD Science Alumni Network.
