Gap Year Position Available with University of Maryland, School of Medicine,
Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences
Dr. Sarah Brem Sunshine at the University of Maryland, School of Medicine is
looking to hire a full-time research assistant for the 2021-2022 year. This
position is ideal for a student planning to attend medical or graduate
school. There will be ample opportunity to gain clinical exposure, receive
mentorship, and publish/present work. Many prior students in the department
have gone on to pursue an MD or MD/PhD. We love seeing our mentees succeed!
This position will be a combination of clinical and basic science research
involving recruitment and enrollment of study patients, interfacing with the
IRB, carrying out study procedures, and coordinating patient visits as well
as performing laboratory work including designing and analyzing animal
studies in murine models and analyzing data including flow cytometry and RNA
sequencing in both mouse and human samples. Our lab is focused on developing
a translational model of mouse ocular graft-vs-host disease (GVHD) to develop
a better understanding of the pathology and novel treatment targets as well
as collecting and evaluating patient samples from our GVHD clinic. This
position will provide the applicant with dedicated in-depth scientific
research, excellent mentorship, as well as clinical exposure and the
opportunity to present/publish research. Worksite will be on the main
hospital campus in Baltimore, MD.
Minimum expected commitment is 12 months, but the position can be extended as
needed. The position has a flexible starting date of May or June 2021 and is
for current graduates or graduating seniors. Part-time or full-time
employment prior to May 2021 is possible and encouraged for training
purposes. This is an ideal position for someone interested in pursuing a
career in medicine or biomedical research.
Ideal applicants are very organized, self-motivated and have experience with
research, teamwork, and patient interaction. A background with previous mouse
