Dear CAST Community, 


We have an open one-year postdoctoral fellowship available at the University of British Columbia. The successful candidate will conduct high-quality research on data analytics, machine learning and control to address real-world industrial problems. The principal investigators, based in UBC’s Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering, expect the research to have a significant influence on industrial practice. The project involves multiple industrial partners from Canada and other countries. The project aims to develop machine learning techniques and control strategies in order to improve energy efficiency and optimize controller performance in industrial processes


Responsibilities: The postdoctoral fellow will be expected to

·   Conduct high-quality original research in machine learning with a particular emphasis on modelling, fault detection and diagnosis and control.

·  Coordinate the project with the industrial partners and prepare regular reports.

·  Mentor Ph.D. and undergraduate students.

·  Travel to the sites of industrial partners and implement control/machine learning algorithms on real industrial processes.  


Qualifications: The applications are preferred to have the following qualifications

.  A recent Ph.D. in Control Systems and/or Machine Learning from a reputed program in Applied Mathematics, Computer Science or Engineering.

.  Some experience with industrial control systems.

·  Strong mathematical skills as they pertain to control theory and machine learning.

·   Excellent programming skills in Matlab, Python and TensorFlow.

·   Excellent written and oral communication skills.


This position is available immediately. The home academic unit at UBC will be one of Chemical and Biological Engineering, Mathematics, or Computer Science, depending on the profile of the successful applicant.
