Subject: Call for Participants!! Asian International Students’ Perceptions
and Experiences of Race, Racialization, Racism, and Neo-racism
Description:
Hello! I’m a fourth-year doctoral candidate in the Higher Education,
Student Affairs, and International Education Policy program at the University
of Maryland. I'm currently conducting my dissertation research on Asian
international students’ perceptions and experiences of race, racialization,
racism, and neo-racism and calling for participants who are (1) an
undergraduate or graduate student who self-identifies as an international
student from Asia; (2) enrolled at UMD during the year 2018 and later; (3)
enrolled at UMD for at least 6-9 months; and (4) are of 18 years or older at
the time of the study. To determine eligibility, you’ll be invited to
complete a brief eligibility survey (5-10 minutes) first. For those who are
not eligible, your data will be deleted immediately and will not be used for
research. If you meet the eligibility, you’ll be invited to participate in
two phases of the study:
In phase I, I’ll join you in 3-4 events, gatherings, workshops, seminars,
and/or classes in your programs, departments, colleges, on-campus and/or off
campus and conduct observation of these events during Fall 2022 semester. As
a part of observation, I’d also like to engage in informal
interviews/dialogues with you. The expected time commitment for the
observations is around 60-90 minutes per observation.
In phase II, I’ll conduct two-rounds of one-one-on in-person interviews
with you regarding your perceptions and experiences of race, racialization,
racism, and neo-racism during Winter and Spring 2023 semesters. Each
interview will last between 60-90 minutes, will be conducted at a mutually
agreeable time and in a mutually agreeable place on campus, and will be
optionally audio-recorded upon your consent. You’ll receive a $30 e-gift
card via email within 24 hours upon completing each interview.
If you are interested in participating in this study, please complete the
eligibility survey at https://umdsurvey.umd.edu/jfe/form/SV_9GjTFUQMw9JZpci.
Upon confirming your interest in participation and eligibility, I’ll send
you additional information on the study, including study purpose, procedures,
potential risks and discomfort, confidentiality, and eliciting your informed
consent to participate in the study. I’m happy to answer any questions
and/or concerns you may have before you make the final decision to
participate in the study. For any questions and/or concerns regarding the
study, please contact me at [log in to unmask] or my dissertation chair Dr. Julie
