Subject: Biologist/Laboratory Manager Description: Biologist/Laboratory Manager Position is located in the Molecular Neuropharmacology Section within the Intramural Research Program, NINDS, NIH. The Section conducts molecular and cell biological studies of neurotransmitter receptor systems in order to elucidate their structure, function and regulatory mechanisms. A specific focus of the laboratory is on the discovery and development of drugs targeting dopamine receptors in relations to the treatment of neuropsychiatric disorders. The incumbent will serve as a research biologist in this field of study and will be responsible for managing a variety of laboratory operations. Duties and Responsibilities: Plans and executes experiments involving the pharmacological characterization of neurotransmitter receptors, including G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) generally, dopamine receptors specifically. Performs a variety of molecular biological, biochemical, and pharmacological techniques; including both membrane and live cell-based signaling assays – knowledge of cell culture is particularly helpful. Performs other molecular, cell biological, or biochemical techniques related to these specific lines of research. The incumbent will also perform specific laboratory management procedures and duties as delegated by the Section Chief. Develops working details of assignments; prepares materials necessary for experiments; determines when modifications and adjustments are necessary, records details of experimental procedures, results and protocols. Analyzes, summarizes and interprets data obtained from research studies; evaluates for completeness and validity; draws conclusions about the results as related to the ability of the experiments to answer the questions posed. Presents results and conclusions in written, tabular and graphic form; prepares accumulated data and conclusions for publication in professional journals. Trains new laboratory personnel in experimental procedures and protocols. Assists senior laboratory staff in specific experiments and projects. Manages transgenic mouse colony. Oversees breeding of animals and genotypes animals as required.
