Subject: Research Associate (214869) - Microbiology Description: Join the HJF Team! HJF is seeking a Research Associate to support ongoing studies in Dr. Brian Schaefer’s laboratory in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology located at the Uniformed Services University (USU) in Bethesda, Maryland. HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to the Department of Microbiology and Immunology. A particular emphasis will be studies of the host response to viral infection using a rodent model. Responsible for research and development in collaboration with other scientific and technical staff. Exercises technical discretion in the design, execution and interpretation of experiments that contribute to project strategies. Previous technical expertise/experience working with rodents is preferred. May require occasional work on evenings or weekends, depending on the workload of the laboratory and the design of the experiment. Responsibilities: Plans, conducts, and completes complex experiments as directed by the principal investigator. Assignments require the performance of complex laboratory tests, determinations, and analyses involving multiple procedures and a variety of technical approaches. Performs in vitro and in vivo virus infections, determining viral titers via histological, molecular and other approaches. Analyzes host response to viral infections using histology, flow cytometry, and other approaches. Uses molecular biology techniques for preparing plasmid DNA vectors and analyzing gene expression. Performs analysis of protein expression and protein-protein interactions using immunoblotting, immunoprecipitation and other protein biochemistry techniques. Assists with the preparation of publication-quality figures and the writing and editing of experimental results for publication in technical and peer-reviewed journals. Performs data analysis and ensures accuracy of tabulated data. Works with other laboratory staff, as required, to complete ongoing projects. Performs other duties as assigned. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Outstanding organizational abilities and attention to detail; good understanding of animal biology and molecular biology; strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to interact in a professional manner with laboratory and University personnel. Experience with rodent handling, molecular biology techniques (e.g., PCR), flow cytometry, tissue culture and BSL-2/ABSL-2 procedures is highly advantageous. Minimum Education/Training Requirements: Master’s degree in scientific discipline. Minimum Experience: 0 to 2 years of directly related research experience. Physical Capabilities: Requires long periods of sitting and standing; handling of various chemicals; working for extended periods with laboratory animals; handling and performing procedures on laboratory animals; working in high health-status barrier facilities wearing appropriate personal protective equipment. Work Environment: Laboratory environment and laboratory animal facility. Background: Eligibility to obtain a Common Access Card (CAC); eligibility to obtain and hold a Public Trust background.
