Subject: Effective Altruism Club Info Session Thursday! Description: The world faces so many problems that it can be difficult to know where to start. Effective altruism (EA) offers a framework for comparing different ways to do good and then acting on the most promising of them. Effective altruism is both a research field and a community of people, dedicated to using evidence and reasoning to work out how to help others the most. In a world increasingly rich with high-quality data and growing technological risks, computer science majors have enormous potential to leverage their skills for good, so we are excited to invite you to Effective Altruism @ UMD's upcoming information session on Thursday, September 15th, from 7:30-8:30 PM in the Carver Room 3403 G (3rd floor of STEM Library). We'll talk about the frameworks we use to evaluate effective opportunities, as well as introduce our upcoming weekly discussion group. Pizza (vegan & non vegan options) will be served. If you are interested in learning more about effective altruism, this 30 minute read is a good introduction to the big ideas as well as the causes many in the community believe are the most important at the moment. https://www.effectivealtruism.org/articles/introduction-to-effective-altruism Event Date: September 15, 2022 Event Start Time: 7:30 pm Event End Time: 8:30 pm Event Location: Carver Room 3403 G (3rd floor of STEM Library) Contact Person: Audrey Rappaport Contact Email: [log in to unmask] Contact Phone Number: 301-832-7283 You received this email because you are subscribed to the Daily eNews for CMNS Students (CMNS-UNDERGRAD-NEWS) mailing list.
