A Short Course on the “Development of CAPE-OPEN Unit Operation models” is organized on November 4, 2007 in Salt Lake City. It is sponsored by the CAPE-OPEN Laboratories Network (CO-LaN) in collaboration with the US Environmental Protection Agency. This hands-on course where you create process model components useable in any process simulator will be given by Dr Lars von Wedel from AixCAPE e.V. (Germany) and Dr Bill Barrett from US Environmental Protection Agency. Both have extended experience in CAPE-OPEN implementation. Lars von Wedel is managing director of the AixCAPE consortium. He started work in the CAPE-OPEN project in 1997 and has continued to work in CAPE software integration with CAPE-OPEN standards since then. He has developed several CAPE-OPEN compliant components, some of them being used in chemical engineering industries. William Barrett is a chemical engineer with the US Environmental Protection Agency. Since 2001 he has worked with the US Environmental Protection Agency, Sustainable Technology Division on applications of Computer-Aided Process Engineering aimed at improving the environmental performance of chemical processes Highlights of this short course include: an introduction into the CAPE-OPEN technology, interactions between the simulation environment and the model components, development of a simple mixer unit operation that implements and utilizes the CAPE-OPEN technology, and other related issues. The full-day session will be hands-on and is intended to give attendees a practical understanding of CAPE-OPEN. WHAT YOU WILL LEARN - Overview of the CAPE-OPEN technology. - Key features of CAPE-OPEN. - The role of property packages and unit operation models in a simulation. - How to use third-party CAPE-OPEN objects in your simulation environment. - Hands-on creation of CAPE-OPEN model objects in C++, Visual Basic or C#. - Use of the created object in a CAPE-OPEN compliant process simulator. - What to anticipate in future developments. WHO SHOULD ATTEND This course will help engineers involved in process modeling, including educators or researchers, to understand the fundamental aspects of CAPE-OPEN technologies that constitute the basis of current calculation tools.
