The Niels Bohr Library & Archives at the American Institute of Physics (AIP)

POSITION ONE ANNOUNCEMENT
 
The American Institute of Physics (AIP) is offering a grant funded position
as an Archives Assistant. AIP is located near the UM-CP campus, close to the
College Park Metro station. Please see below for details:

POSITION: Digital Project Library Assistant

HOURS: 20 hours per week, flexible schedule

WAGES: $18 per hour 

AVAILABLE: September 2008 

DESCRIPTION:  The Center for History of Physics at the American Institute
for Physics in College Park, MD seeks a part-time assistant for a digital
project in the Niels Bohr Library & Archives. The assistant will work with
the Center librarian to digitize and put on the Web oral history
transcripts. Tasks will include scanning and OCR’ing transcripts,
proofreading the OCR’d text, locating contact information for project
participants, editing and sending form letters and keeping track of letters
sent and received in the library’s Access database. This is a grant funded
position with a possible term of one and half years.

QUALIFICATIONS:  Minimum Bachelor’s degree or extensive previous experience
required.  Must be comfortable using word processing programs, OCR and FTP
software, and scanners. The ideal candidate should have strong problem
solving skills, data entry, organizing and proofreading skills.
 
Knowledge of science is not required.
 
Must be able to lift 40 pound boxes of library materials.

POSITION: PAID INTERNSHIP (Archives Assistant) 

HOURS: 15-20 hours per week, flexible schedule

WAGES: $12 per hour 

AVAILABLE: September 2008 

DESCRIPTION: The Niels Bohr Library & Archives, American Institute of
Physics, seeks a part-time archives assistant to help with a grant funded
project to improve access to our large oral history interview collection and
to perform other related tasks. The assistant will work with and report to
the Library's Assistant Archivist. The NBL&A is a special collection in the
history of physics and allied fields. For additional information see our

QUALIFICATIONS: Minimum of B.A. Prefer some graduate work in archives
administration. 
 
Knowledge of science is not required.

position as Photo Archives Intern. AIP is located near the UM-CP campus,

POSITION:  PAID INTERNSHIP (Photo Archives Intern)
 
HOURS:  15-20 hours per week, flexible schedule
 
WAGES:  $12 per hour
 
AVAILABLE:  September 2008
 
DESCRIPTION:  The Niels Bohr Library's Emilio SegrèVisual Archives, American
Institute of Physics, seeks a part-time photo archives intern to help scan
and catalog historical photographs. The intern will work with and report to
the Library's Photo Administrator, and may help in processing planning. 
This position will last at least through December 2008.  Please see our

QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelors degree preferred.
 
PREFERRED:  Experience with computers, scanners, data entry, and web
applications. Some graduate work in library science, history, archives, or
other applicable fields a plus.
