Research Associates
Centre for Process Systems Engineering
Department of Chemical Engineering
Imperial College London
Salary from £29,550 to £37,500 per annum
(various 2,3 and 4 years appointments)
The MOBILE (modelling, control and optimization of biomedical systems) project is an Advanced Grant awarded by the European Research Council. 5 PhD students (Researcher Level A) and 2 Post-Doctorate Associates (Researcher Level B) will be recruited over the next two years. The aim of the research is to create intelligent computer model-based systems for the automation of drug delivery, such as insulin delivery devices for diabetes, advisory systems for the optimal dosage of anaesthetics and robust protocols for the optimal delivery of chemotherapeutic agents for cancer and HIV.
The research will focus on (i) modelling of drug delivery systems (insulin delivery systems, delivery of chemotherapeutic agents in cancer, anaesthesia, and chemotherapy of HIV), (ii) development of novel theory and algorithms in multi-parametric programming and multi-parametric model predictive control (new fast multi-parametric control algorithms, simultaneous parameter/state estimation, robust multi-parametric control, model reduction techniques), and (iii) development, testing and validating prototype software based procedures and prototype hardware controllers in the context of automation of drug delivery systems
Check the following website address for details:

The research activity will be housed within the Centre for Process Systems Engineering, awarded the Queen's Award for Excellence in research and technology transfer in 2002, at the Department of Chemical Engineering, ranked the top chemical engineering department in the UK in the recent U.K. Research Assessment Exercise. The Centre is a world leading research establishment in the areas of modelling, simulation and optimization (four of the founding academic members of the centre were awarded the prestigious Mac Robert Award from the Royal Academy of Engineering in 2007), model predictive control and multi-parametric programming (with European and American patents granted in 2007 and 2008, respectively) and a methodological model-based systems engineering approach to process, molecular, energy and biological systems.
Background expertise will be required, where appropriate, in the following areas:
*	Modelling, optimization and control
*	Biomedical systems and drug delivery systems (for diabetes, anaesthesia, cancer, HIV)
*	Multi-parametric programming and multi-parametric control
The appointees should hold either a BSc (or equivalent, Researcher Level A positions) or a PhD (or equivalent, Researcher Level B positions) in engineering (chemical, biomedical, electrical), computational biology, medicine, operations research or a related subject.
An application form and job description can be obtained from the following website: http://www3.imperial.ac.uk/employment/applicationformchairreaderclinlecresearch.
Please send the completed application form, together with a CV and list of publications, to Miss Senait Selassie, email [log in to unmask], Department of Chemical Engineering, Centre for Process Systems Engineering, Imperial College London, South Kensington campus, London, SW7 2AZ, United Kingdom. Please mark in the "subject" field in your e-mail in capital letters: "MOBILE BIOMEDICAL SYSTEMS ENGINEERING RESEARCHER".
Closing date for applications: 15 MARCH 2009.
Valuing diversity and committed to equality of opportunity
