The American Institute of Physics (AIP) is offering an 18-month grant funded
position as an Archives Assistant. AIP is located near the UM-CP campus,

POSITION: Archives Assistant

HOURS: 20 hours per week, flexible schedule

WAGES: $12 per hour 

AVAILABLE: January 2009 

DESCRIPTION:  The Center for History of Physics at the American Institute of
Physics in College Park, MD seeks a part-time assistant for a digital
project in the Niels Bohr Library & Archives. The assistant will work with
an archivist to digitize and put on the Web a manuscript collection. Tasks
will include preparation of documents prior to scanning (removing staples
and other fasteners, slip-sheeting items with acid-free paper, reboxing or
refolding as needed), preparing shipments to the scanning vendor, and
checking the quality of the scanned items after receipt from the scanning
vendor. This is a grant funded position with a possible term of one and half
years.

QUALIFICATIONS:  Minimum of Bachelor’s degree or previous experience
required; preference to a student currently enrolled in a Master’s degree
program in archival studies.  The ideal candidate should have previous
experience in collections processing and have proofreading skills and
attention to detail.
 
Knowledge of science is not required.
 
Must be able to lift 40 pound boxes of library materials.
