Special Collections Librarian
Goucher College invites applications for a Special Collections Librarian to participate in an exciting grant-funded project “Mapping Special Collections for Research and Teaching at Goucher College.” This project will involve the preparation and cataloging of a wide range of mostly 18^th and 19^th century materials including texts, sheet music, and personal papers from the James Wilson Bright Collection, the Burke Jane Austen Collection, the Sara Haardt Mencken Collection, and others. The project team will also include one para-professional and two students.

This full-time temporary 12-month position, funded by the Council on Library and Information Resources, has a competitive salary and benefits and runs from February 2009 to February 2010.    Responsibilities include conducting bibliographic research and description, arranging manuscript and archival collections, developing inventories and collection-level finding aids, and providing guidance on bibliographic matters to other staff engaged in cataloging rare materials.

Requirements:  ALA-accredited MLS or equivalent education/experience, experience conducting bibliographic description, and processing archival and/or manuscript materials. Knowledge of the history and bibliography of rare books; practical knowledge of archival principles and practices and creating finding aids; and knowledge of cataloging and cataloging standards for rare books, manuscripts, and archives.

Qualified applicants will have a strong service orientation, excellent oral and written communication skills, a positive interpersonal style, the ability to work independently and as part of a team, and flexibility, initiative, and creativity. 

Goucher College is a selective private liberal arts college of about 1500 students, located in suburban Baltimore. In July 2009 the library will move to the Goucher Athenaeum, with expanded special collections space and increased emphasis on teaching with special collections.  Special Collections include rare books and manuscript collections that enhance the curriculum, with particular concentrations in English language and literature, U.S. politics, peace studies, women’s history, dance, and theater.
