Special Collections Cataloger
Goucher College invites applications for a Special Collections Cataloger to participate in an exciting grant-funded project “Mapping Special Collections for Research and Teaching at Goucher College.” This project will involve the preparation and cataloging of a wide range of mostly 18th and 19th century materials including texts, sheet music, and personal papers from the James Wilson Bright Collection, the Burke Jane Austen Collection, the Sara Haardt Mencken Collection, and others. The project team will also include one para-professional and two students.
This full-time temporary 12-month position, funded by the Council on Library and Information Resources, has a competitive salary and benefits and runs from February 2009 to February 2010. Responsibilities include determining appropriate catalog record needs, performing copy cataloging from OCLC copy when available, creating original catalog records for submission to OCLC along with any requisite authority work, and creating MARC format records for archival/manuscript collections.
Requirements: ALA-accredited Master’s degree in library or information science; experience in cataloging of library materials, particularly with the bibliographic description of rare materials in various formats including manuscript collections, experience working with OCLC, familiarity with DCRM(B), AACR2, LCSH, LCRI, and MARC21 required and APPM and DACS preferred. Experience working with integrated library systems, particularly Innovative Interfaces’ Millennium and familiarity/experience with the creation of institutional records within OCLC preferred.
Qualified applicants will have a strong service orientation, excellent oral and written communication skills, a positive interpersonal style, the ability to work independently and as part of a team, and flexibility, initiative, and creativity.
Goucher College is a selective private liberal arts college of about 1500 students, located in suburban Baltimore. In July 2009 the library will move to the Goucher Athenaeum, with expanded special collections space and increased emphasis on teaching with special collections. Special Collections include rare books and manuscript collections that enhance the curriculum, with particular concentrations in English language and literature, U.S. politics, peace studies, women’s history, dance, and theater.
