He found himself living the principles of the book unexpectedly beginning in December, 2008, following a multiple-employee layoff from USA TODAY, after 21 years. He was the embedded librarian in the News section of the newspaper, and for the final 12 years, also wrote about business and management books for the Money section. The psychological blow of a layoff was considerably tempered because he had already built the multidimensional principles in the book into his own life. He began working on the book in late 2002, and has taught as a lecturer at The Catholic University of America's School of Library and Information Science in Washington, D.C., since 1996.
