Advocates for Youth seeks an intern to work in its library/research center 15-20 hours per week for the fall semester or fall and spring semesters. As the library intern, the individual will provide support to the Director of Public Information Services, with a primary focus on technical services and collection maintenance. Library tasks may include shelving and filing, assistance with cataloging and indexing, and advising staff on recent research in their field. The individual should currently be enrolled in graduate school in library and information services OR should be a senior in college with an interest in library sciences, and should have the ability to work on multiple projects independently. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who wants experience working in a special library and has a general interest in adolescent reproductive and sexual health and rights. Advocates is highly committed to youth development, and therefore provides its interns with a flexible and supportive work environment in which each intern can find ways to pursue his or her own interests while here. DUTIES: - Keeping staff up to date on recent research in the field through compiling a weekly research report - Assigning subject headings to a large number of journal articles in the library’s collection. - Assisting with copy cataloging and processing new materials. - Shelving and maintaining shelf order - Contributing to the organization’s youth activism blog with new books, news and research updates (and other commentary as desired) - Other library and administrative tasks (including interlibrary loan and some photocopying and filing) as necessary. QUALIFICATIONS - Must currently be enrolled in a graduate-level program in library and information services (or must be starting in fall) - An interest in adolescent and sexual health issues - An interest in special libraries and nonprofit libraries - Good attention to detail and organizational skills - Experience using library software is a plus; an understanding of MS Office programs and proficiency using the Internet for research is a must.
