Process Control Applications Graduate Intern ExxonMobil Research and Engineering (EMRE) is searching for a chemical engineering graduate student pursuing a Ph.D. in the area of advanced process control and optimization for an internship experience. The target start date is summer 2010. The work location is EMRE’s Central Engineering Office in Fairfax, VA. Engineers in EMRE’s Advanced Control section contribute to the design, implementation, and sustainment of the advanced automation systems at ExxonMobil refineries and chemical plants that enable processes to run safely, cleanly, and more profitably. Our engineers design innovative solutions to complex control problems, develop new tools to help control room operators and engineers better operate the manufacturing facilities, and implement these solutions in practice. Our current interests are in scalable model-based estimation, control, and optimization technologies for increasingly autonomous manufacturing systems. To stay current with new technologies, engineers in the Advanced Control section keep in contact with academic researchers to learn about their latest research developments. During this research focused internship, the student will gain exposure to the real-life challenges involved with designing innovative advanced control solutions for large, complex refining and chemical processes. The business impact of technology solutions will be emphasized. Preference will be given to candidates whose graduate research is aligned with EMRE’s R&D program. In addition to a research background in advanced process control and demonstrated high levels of academic achievement, successful candidates will demonstrate solid technical capabilities, innovative thinking, strong initiative, and good communication skills. This search is open until 18 Dec 2009.
