LIBRARIAN and CULTURAL DIVERSITY SPECIALIST

The University of Michigan Library is seeking a librarian with a passion for multicultural diversity issues as well as experience working in an academic library setting in a specific subject specialty.  This critical appointment will reside jointly in a library unit pertinent to the candidate's area of expertise and in the Library Administration (for the Diversity Specialist portion).  The individual will jointly report to a unit or division head for the subject portion, and to the Dean of Libraries for the cultural diversity responsibilities. The subject specialist component may include collection development, instruction, campus liaison, reference, digital asset management, and/or other responsibilities according to the joint needs and interests of the candidate and the University Library. The Cultural Diversity Specialist responsibilities include a wide range of projects and activities supporting the Library's diversity initiatives. As a participant in the Library's staff planning, review, and decision-making processes, the Librarian and Cultural Diversity Officer will assist with the coordination, development and promotion of initiatives and programs that insure a professional, inclusive and pluralistic work environment.  The incumbent will also be responsible for assisting with the librarian and professional recruitment program and coordinating minority outreach initiatives.

Responsibilities:

Provide leadership, guidance, and assistance with the development, facilitation, implementation, and evaluation of Library diversity initiatives. The subject specialist responsibilities may include collection development, instruction, campus liaison, reference, digital asset management, and other responsibilities according to the joint needs and interests of the candidate and the University Library.

   * Determine goals, objectives and strategies in establishing and implementing system-wide diversity initiatives in the areas of human resources, user services, and collection management.
   * Develop effective mechanisms for evaluating Library diversity initiatives.
   * Conduct research on diversity related topics including planning, design, and coordination of various studies and special projects.
Write reports and communiqués; compile and analyze statistical data.
   * Facilitate communication and perform liaison functions between Library administration and various Library unit activities related to cultural diversity.
   * Represent the Library at appropriate meetings and professional activities and work with various University officers and constituents in the area of cultural diversity.
   * Establish outreach mechanisms for diversifying applicant pools for all Library positions.
   * Lead the University Library's outreach initiatives and assist LHR staff responsible for coordinating Librarian recruitment activities.



Qualifications:

Required:  a relevant advanced degree (ALA accredited preferred), or an equivalent combination of an advanced degree and experience in the area of librarianship and cultural diversity; prior experience working in an academic environment; knowledge of, participation in, and experience with national groups promoting cultural awareness; knowledge of trends and issues related to organizational culture and cultural diversity; substantial experience in working effectively with a large diverse staff; ability to provide leadership and manage programs and initiatives; outstanding communication skills; and ability to work independently within a variety of assignments.
