Office of Minority Health Resource Center Internship

 

Established in 1986, the overall mission of the Office of Minority Health is to improve and protect the health of racial and ethnic minority populations through the development of health policies and programs that will eliminate health disparities.  It advises the HHS Secretary on public health program activities affecting American Indians and Alaska Natives, Asian Americans, Blacks/African Americans, Hispanics/Latinos, Native Hawaiians, and other Pacific Islanders.

 

The Office of Minority Health Resource Center (OMHRC) is seeking a student intern for Winter/Spring Semester 2011to serve in its library.  This internship will provide an MLS student with experience in special librarianship in some of the following areas: cataloging, indexing, reference resources and digitization. The library is contracted to serve the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services Office of Minority Health staff members as well as public patrons, providing access to information resources specifically related to minority health and health disparities within the United States.

 

The intern will have the opportunity to contribute to the daily operation of the library by:

-Cataloging and indexing print and electronic journal articles
-Editing existing library catalog records to coordinate with a new Integrated Library System, using INMAGIC software
-Linking catalog records to electronic resources
-Assisting in preparations for a digitization project
-Writing content for the Knowledge Center webpage development

 

Qualifications:

The student must be currently enrolled in an MLS degree program with an interest in special libraries or public health. Additionally, the student should be detail-oriented and have excellent organizational, communication, and Internet skills. The ability to work independently is also preferred.  Some physical work will be required to inventory and weed the collection, in preparation for a digitization project. Minority students are encouraged to apply.

 

Schedule & Salary:

This position offers a salary of $10.00/hour, with no added benefits. The internship will be available beginning early in January 2011. The intern will be expected to work from 12 to 15 hours per week, for a minimum of 10 weeks.  No relocation or housing allowance is available for this position.
