Special Lecturer for the Library Day Program
NATURE OF THE WORK:
This is a wonderful opportunity for graduate students to gain valuable teaching experience in a large academic library setting. The University Libraries partner with the Department of English’s Academic Writing Program to provide an instruction program that introduces research and library skills to first-year students enrolled in ENGL 101: Academic Writing (see: http://www.english.umd.edu/). This program is commonly referred to as the ‘Library Day’ Program. This important and highly valued program represents a first year college students’ formal introduction to a large and complex library system. During a one-shot session, in a computer lab setting, Special Lecturers teach information literacy skills to ENGL 101 students. This is covered in every session by demonstrating how to break a research topic into keyword concepts, brainstorming for synonyms, developing search strategies, choosing the appropriate library resource to search, and discussing how to evaluate information. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE SPECIAL LECTURER:
- Commits to teaching during both the Fall 2011 and Spring 2012 semesters.
- Teaches approximately 15-30 Library Day classes per semester within a 5-6 week period estimated to be 9/19-10/28 2011 & 2/13-4/6 2012.
- Attends training, practice and observation sessions as assigned by the department.
- Communicates by email, in advance of workshop, with ENGL 101 instructors.
- Attends all assigned classes and arrives early to set up the lab.
- Reflects on and improves teaching based on department feedback.
- Reports technical problems encountered in the instruction lab after session(s) ends.
- Submits personal teaching statistics in a timely manner using an online form.
- Completes timesheet in a timely manner as directed by the department.
- Performs department directives that include delivering assessment measures.
Enrollment in a Masters program at UM's College of Information Studies or Department of English
QUALIFICATIONS (KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES):
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Teaching experience (limited is okay) or strong aptitude for teaching is desirable.
- Ability to remain calm and flexible despite technical difficulties and last minute changes.
- Ability to effectively use a web browser (i.e., Firefox, IE).
- Projects a professional and positive image of the Libraries.
- Ability to teach multiple, and sometimes successive, instruction sessions per day.
- Familiarity with the Libraries’ information resources, services and collections is desired, including the ability to explain, interpret and evaluate the research process.
Fall 2011: August 31 – October 28, 2011
Spring 2012: January 25 – April 6, 2012
Note: In the fall, prior to the first Library Day (e.g., September 19th) the Special Lecturers will begin the employment period by meeting with department staff for training and observation. In the spring, prior to the first Library Day (e.g., February 13th) Special Lecturers will meet with the department for scheduling.
$15.00 per hour. Projected totals are 60-70 hours for the 2011-2012 academic year; total hours may vary.
Note: The number of hours paid depends in large part on the number of ENGL 101 sections scheduled per semester, and on your availability to teach. Preference will be given to those with more availability. Special Lecturers will be paid for training, practice, and preparation time.
