The NG Library maintains book, periodical, map, and electronic resource collections; provides Society staff and partners with reference and research services; produces competitive editorial and business information reports; manages the Society's archives and records; produces comprehensive indexing to Society-published content, and more. .
Summary of Position
The Senior Librarian provides leadership throughout NG Library to develop and manage specific functions related to library operations. Provides expert research and reference services and contributes to collection development. Also participates actively in Library teams, including website, collections development (electronic, print). Coordinates library training program, including use of technology for virtual offerings. Oversees marketing and outreach of library products and services, following industry best practices. Participates in cross-divisional teams as a representative of NG Library and provides expertise in knowledge and information management and facilitates the sharing of information across divisions. This might include producing or managing original products (e.g., EarthCurrent, Research Guides), or leveraging other content rich collections.
1. Reference, Research, and Competitive Intelligence: Provides expert reference services and consultations. Serves on the reference desk at least one day per week and as needed. Serves as subject area expert (e.g. travel and missions) and adviser to NGS staff and Library colleagues. Writes, edits, and posts brief summaries of business and market intelligence as required by Society business needs.
2. Research Training: Provides research training for Society editorial and business staff. Teaches advanced classes including Research Essentials and Finding Experts. Consults with groups on their divisional information needs and provides custom training to increase efficiencies and quality of research results. Develops, delivers, and manages curricula educating clients in information literary, internet usage, and locating and interpreting information sources. Creates virtual training experiences on library database and website use. Trains other staff in use of training applications software.
3. Collections and Database Management: Serves as expert in identifying the best information resources, examining features of resources available from multiple vendors, and providing access to those resources for the organization by negotiating cost-effective contracts with vendors. Works in standard ILS systems such as Polaris or Voyager manage assigned electronic and print collections, which might include electronic documents, books, subject research guides, or subject specific areas (e.g. business or science). Manages specific databases and electronic content, including research guides in HTML and the CampusGuides software.
4. Marketing and Outreach / Interns: Leads library marketing and outreach. Markets information services and products, both formally and informally, through Web and physical communication, including print calendars, presentations, publications and conversations. Provides feedback on user interfaces to facilitate resource use, and helps to develop usability studies and focus groups to align information products with staff needs. Selects and manages Library interns.
5. Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Education & Experience
MLS from an ALA accredited Library School and at least three years library or comparable professional experience that provides an understanding of information retrieval, database design, and structure models as well as end-user needs. Excellent oral and written communication skills and project management skills required. Focus on customer service to staff and ability to bring new ideas/programs to the division required. Instructional/teaching experience.
Knowledge & Skill Requirements
Demonstrated knowledge and expertise in research and reference, and searching structured / unstructured databases. Experience in creating and offering training classes, research guides, and online learning materials. Project management experience. Experience in HTML and website management. Ability to lead people and to contribute to teams. Ability to write policies, procedures, strategic documents clearly and concisely. Strong negotiations skills.
Experience creating online tutorials and library marketing/outreach strongly preferred. Collection development, indexing, cataloging, or archival experience desirable.
This position seeks alliances with other functions within the organization to optimize complementary knowledge and skills. Pursues positions or projects outside NG Library to gain a better understanding of how other functions apply information in their work and uses this information to create services and programs for users.
