U.S. Department of Energy National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) Position title: Post-doctoral scholar in gas separations process design and optimization Description: Two post-docs are sought with experience in gas separations systems analysis. Specific modeling needs include: 1. Systems modeling of membranes for post-combustion capture of CO2 from flue gas. This work will result in an evaluation of energy consumption and cost for a post-combustion CO2 capture membrane system. Also, new and innovative process designs for membrane based gas separation will be developed, such as a hybrid solvent-membrane system and others. 2. Systems modeling of a sorbent system for separation of oxygen from air. This is a feasibility study for the use of a novel sorbent to be used in large scale oxygen production. The sorbent system will be evaluated for energy consumption and cost. Our research group studies gas separations for industrial energy applications with an emphasis on solvent, sorbent, and membrane materials. The incumbents will become part of a dynamic research group addressing all aspects of materials development including molecular modeling, synthesis and characterization, device fabrication, performance testing, and systems analysis. The incumbents will work closely with experimentalists to model systems that are based on real materials being developed at the NETL. The position will be located either in Morgantown, WV or Pittsburgh, PA at NETL, a center of excellence in carbon dioxide capture and sequestration research. Minimum qualifications: A Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering or a related field with experience and publications in process design and optimization Preferred qualifications: Experience with Aspen or similar systems analysis software; previous modeling of gas separation systems; previous modeling of power generation systems; experience with sorbent or membrane modeling and theory; experience with membrane module design; previous work in computational fluid dynamics. Start date: Immediate Location: Morgantown, WV or Pittsburgh, PA Term of employment: Full time; renewable for up to three years total Salary information: Commensurate with qualifications and experience; competitive benefits package Application closing date: Open until filled To apply: Please send a letter of application and CV to Dr. David Hopkinson, [log in to unmask]
